Watershed Assessment Public Meetings Scheduled

The Howard County Department of Public Works will hold the second round of four public meetings to discuss a comprehensive assessment within the Middle Patuxent River and the Little Patuxent River watersheds. This assessment measured current environmental conditions and identified restoration opportunities to be considered for capital improvement projects. These projects will improve water quality in the County’s streams and rivers as well as the Chesapeake Bay. Potential projects include stream restoration, adding water quality treatment to existing stormwater management ponds, constructing new stormwater management facilities, performing reforestation, and stabilizing existing storm drain pipe outfalls.

Due to the large overall study area, the assessment results are being presented in four distinct areas — Northern Little Patuxent, Southern Little Patuxent, Northern Middle Patuxent, and Southern Middle Patuxent watersheds. The County will conduct a public meeting in each of these four study areas to report on the final results of the watershed assessments and to present its countywide restoration plan for meeting Chesapeake Bay Total Maximum Daily Load (TMDL) goals.

A copy of the watershed assessment reports and the countywide restoration plan report will be posted on or about December 1, 2015 for public review and comment at www.howardcountymd.gov/SWM.htm.
